Pages: 4

How to use:

Preparation:
Print out and cut out the Jobs - Meanings handout into individual flashcards. The Japanese flashcards are in the same order as the English flashcards. If you can't read the Japanese, make some sort of mark on them so you know which ones match. For example, you could write a number on each card and have cards that match have number that are a difference of 7. After printing them out and writing any needed help on them, laminate them if you can. Print out a copy of the Jobs/MASH handout for each student.
Procedure:

Count how many students are in a given class.  If there are 38, use the first 19 (Architect through Scientist).  Mix those 38 cards (19 English 19 Japanese) and give a card to each student.  If there is an odd number of students, give the JTE a card.  They must find their match.  When they do, they must check with you.  If they are correct, they can hold onto their cards and sit down in their desks.  If they are wrong they have to keep looking.  Once the final students find their match, go over the answers.  Start with Architect.  Have the Architect pair standup and the student with the Japanese card announces the Japanese meaning.  Go all the way through Scientist.  With the remaining cards, you can either have the students do the same activity with partners, or have the JTE write the Japanese meanings of the remaining cards on the boards and have the students match the leftovers as a class.  It depends on how many you have left over for a Round 2.

Next, check the meaning of "Dream Job" and "Nightmare Job" with the students.  Have the students write their dream job and nightmare job on the blanks.  They can use jobs not listed above if they'd like.

Have the students use their dream job info to do the small conversation.

This is the end of class 1.

Class 2:

Finish the conversation if you didn't have time in class 1.

Play Mash.

How to play Mash:

Mash is an American Children's game of divination.  We will use it to find what kind of house the students live will live in, what their jobs will be, where they will live, and who they will be married to.

First, find your JTEs future for the students.

Draw the MASH chart on the board, and explain the acronym, MASH:

Mansion

Apartment

Shack

House

The students will know Apartment and Shack.  Explain to them what a shack is and the difference between English and Japanese "Mansion".

To fill out the following blanks.

First, on the left side.  Ask your JTE: What is your dream job?

After he answers, put his dream job on any of the 4 left blanks.

Next, ask your JTE: What is your nightmare job?

Put his nightmare job on any of the remaining 3 left blanks.

Fill in the remaining 2 blanks with your own choices.

For the bottom part, repeat, except change it to "What is your dream place to live?"

Continue with Nightmare place to live, and 2 choices of your own for the JTE.

On the right side, ask your JTE "Who is your dream husband/wife?"  Continue with their nightmare husband/wife and 2 choices of your own.

Next, you must find your partner's magic number.  To do this, draw a spiral until your JTE yells, "STOP!"  Then, count how many lines you made in the spiral.  This is your JTEs magic number.

Starting with the M in MASH, count clockwise around the box until you get to the magic number.  Cross off whatever entry is there and repeat from that spot.  Keep going around the box, skipping over crossed off entries.  When there is only one remaining on a certain side, circle it.  Once you have 4 things circled and everything else crossed off, you've found your JTE's future.

Have the students do the activity with a partner.  When they finish, they must write their own future (as decided by their partner) in the middle of the MASH box.
