Through the Bombs aims at teaching 4th or 5th grade students about giving directions in English. The target vocabulary is: Go straight, go back, turn left and turn right.

Through the Bombs is in pdf format for easy printing and contains both full color and copier-friendly versions as well as instructions on how to play the game.

Pages: 5

How to use:

Intro:
Through the Bombs is a game that teaches children how to give directions, using the vocabulary: Go Straight, Turn Left, Turn Right, and Go Back.

Skills Used: Speaking, listening
Level: Medium
Ages: 8 and a up (possibly younger).
Group Size: 2 or more people. This game works well with large groups.

Setup:
Have the students make pairs. For the copier-friendly version, every student will need one, Through the Bombs, game sheet. Each pair will need one pencil.

For the full color version, every student will need one, Through the Bombs, game sheet and each pair will need five bomb counters.

How to Play:
One student is the player and the other student is the Game Master. In secret, the Game Master draws (if using the copier-friendly version) five bombs on the squares of his game sheet or if using the full color version, places the five bomb counters in the squares on the game sheet. The Game Master must not place the bombs in a way that makes it impossible to get to the goal i.e. five bombs straight across the board.

Once the Game Master is ready, the player then begins trying to get from the start to the goal without landing on any of the Game Master's bombs. To move, the player calls out: Go Straight, Turn Left, Turn Right, or Go Back as he works toward the goal square. If at any point the player lands on one of the Game Master”s bombs, the Game Master calls out, “Boom!” and the player returns to the start square for another try. The player has three chances to make it to the goal.

Hello,

I downloaded this game and it looks really nice but I haven't tried it yet. I'm trying to figure out why there are two versions of the game. I mean one for making copies and one for using with a printer? Are they different games?

Thanks,

Evian (in France)

@Silke Thanks I'm glad your class liked it and I'm sorry I missed your comment for one week.

@Evian I'm sorry, I should have explained the reason for the two versions in the instructions. There is only one game in the pdf. The full color one is for anyone who might be teaching small groups and would be printing the game off of their computer printer. The full color version is for really big classes where doing full color might be too expensive. Again sorry for the confusion.

I played it with my fifth and sixth grades today and it was a big hit in both classes. My sixth graders can be rather sullen and ungenki , so I'm always glad when I find something they like.

@bcalhoun

Thanks for the kind words. If you go to my website naruhodo-eigo.com and you find broken links, excuse the mess. I'm in the process of changing web hosting. I think my site is almost 80% back up... there's lots of stuff there.

Again thanks!
