Teach students how to describe someone's physical features. Preparation: 1) Download the attached handout.
2) Download the PowerPoint Presentation from Google Documents:
Part 1:...Teach students how to describe someone's physical features.
3. Personalize the handout. You can change the facial hair photos to your own (especially amusing to students if you are female) and/or change the name at the bottom of the paper to yours.
4. Familiarize yourself with the PowerPoint Presentation. It goes through the handout step by step.
Procedure:
**This Lesson Takes 2 Class Periods**
Use the PowerPoint Presentation to guide your students through the handout. You can elicit some of the vocabulary from your students (Tall, Short, Fat, Slim, Slender), while other words you will just have to show to them (the rest). You also should be able to get them to guess the meanings of "height" and "build" by looking at the pictures.
Make sure you have the students write down the sentence forms for height/build and hair. This is the most important part as it turns vocabulary into spoken English. Prepare pictures of people to have them practice the sentence forms. If you have no pictures to use or artistic talent, you can add photos from the internet for the class to practice as a group.
On the 2nd page of the handout, get the students to write the various forms of facial hair under the 5 pictures (this part is guided by the handout). Have the students look at the various examples of each type of facial hair and draw them on the 5 pictures.
In the bottom section of the handout, the students have to try to arrange the clothing terms into the correct categories. Afterward, once again have them practice with pictures of people.
Notes:
If you're wondering whether to bother getting it, please realize it contains the following:
Manute Bol, Mini Me, The Fat Motorcycle Twins, Arnold Schwarzzanagger fighting Billy Blanks, Crazy-Small Waist Lady, Crazy-Long Hair ladies, much of the cast of Saved By the Bell!, Justin with various colored on facial hair, Wilford Bremley, Tom Selleck, Burt Reynolds, and so much more!
ETA: The Powerpoint isn't necessary. This was a fairly successful lesson for me for 3 years without the powerpoint. However, the Powerpoint increases the Boo-Ya! effect of the presentation by 42.7fold. Who doesn't want that?
